1. GENERAL
How to use this document
Place the schematics behind this manual.
Now you are able to follow these specifictions with graphical layouts and it is easier for you to find the components
and measuring points.
General handling
Special Note: Before starting repair, interchange all modules (PDA, CMT, UI) with functional modules to define
the faulty one. Check also the test equipment of proper functionality.
Component characteristics
Some components contain important data.
Several described steps are only practicable if you are able to reflash/ realign the phone and/ or rewrite IMEI/ SIMlock in
certain cases. Please pay attention to separate notes.
Use only the 9110i PDA SW for 9110i communicator known by the special product codes. It is not allowed to flash 9110
PDA with 9110i SW.
Broken balls / underfill, µBGAs
All replaceable (not underfilled) µBGA components must be renewed after removing. Reflow with uncontrolled hot air
fan is strictly forbidden! It is also not recommended only to reflow the old µBGA using a µBGA rework station! µBGA
must only be soldered with NMP approved µBGA rework machines (e.g. Zevac / OK-Metcal / Martin) to get durable
soldering joints.
After removing a µBGA check soldering points, if necessary rework oxidated solderings (broken balls) carefully by
tinplating these areas with few flux and a hot soldering iron. Before placing a new component remove the tin and
clean the PCB, e.g. with help of solder wick and flux cleaner such as “Kontakt LR”.
Use only recommended Fluxtype and an appropriate amount of it - avoid drowning the PCB in flux as this will result in
additional faults!
Also check underfilled parts for broken underfill material below. In this case carefully evaluate possible repair actions as
the phone probably was exposed to strong mechanical stress.
Check tuning values after repair
Characteristics of replacement parts are different.
To prevent additional faults after repair (RX quality, TX power etc.) it is necessary to check phone tuning values.
For tuning see Service Manual at Chapter Service SW and Tuning Instructions

4. MEASUREMENTS/CHECKS
SIM card functionality – measurements/checks
‘INSERT SIM CARD’
-
Check if connector pins of SIM card reader X150 are bent or soiled change X150 if necessary.
Check resistance at Pin 1-6 before opening the phone (Look picture below).
Note! Short–circuit the X160 (battery connector) between Pin 1 and 4, to unload the capacitors for a short moment.
Now check the resistance between GND (Pin 4) and the other five Pin´s with a multimeter.
If broken connection or grounded Pin´s, check V104, R124, R125, R128, C127, C128 and N110 for cold or broken
solderings or change faulty component if necessary.
-
Check VSIM=3/5V (depend on used SIMCard) at X150 Pin 3/5. If no signal, probably the CCONT N110 is faulty
-

‘SIM CARD NOT ACCEPTED’
If “SIMcard not accepted” appears on LCD after entering PIN- Code, a SIMlock is probably activated in phone
Check SIMlock status with WinTesla SW under menu Quick/RF-info. Compare shown SIMlock data with the listed
entries of the respective product code.
Note! If the MSIN data field is closed to a special IMSI number range, only the operator is authorized to open it.
See also General SB-065
If all SIMlocks closed, try to reprogram the SIMlock setting with NOKIA SECURITY PASSWORD or send phone to the
next authorized regional service center.
If the fault persists, check VCOBBA=2.8V at J110, if not ok see chapter CMT functionality – measurements/checks,
page 21.
Check COBBACLK=13MHz (Vpp=3.47V) at J253 (see picture below), if not ok see chapter CMT functionality –
measurements/checks, page 21.
-
If SIMlock data´s and SIMcard signals from CCONT are ok, change N250 COBBA
NOTE! Rewrite SIMlock and IMEI data with Nokia SECURITY Password and make a SW-update, if procedure is permitted
to you.

Battery too empty or power line faulty
-
If nothing happens then remove and insert the battery again. If still nothing happens try to use another phone
with the same empty battery.
If also nothing happens try to use only the empty battery with desktop charger DCH-7.
After about 5 minutes charging reconnect the battery to the communicator and try to charge.
If the charging not works try a probably working battery with the communicator. If it fails check following values:
Check the battery voltage = 3.6V (or over 3.4V) at battery pack
Check VB=3.6V at J111 (when battery is assembled to the communicator)
Check VBat line (X160, L103) for short circuits
Check BSI and BTEMP line to CCONT (X160, R122, D100, CCONT N110) for short circuits or broken connections
If all lines ok, see next repair instructions “Not charging”.

-
First check the condition of the X170 system connector, e.g. guidance pins (see picture on page 49). Check also the
contact between contact springs and the Printed Wiring Board (there might be dust/dirt or corrosion on the
contact area)
Then check with WinTesla-menu Tuning/Energy Management Calibration, which fault appears
If charger voltage/Battery voltage out of limit, check R103=4.7kΩ and R104=47kΩ. If values not ok check
VCHARG line and components for shorts or breaks, change faulty one (N110, N120, R103, R104)
Check Pad 2 V_IN=50kΩ and Pad 3 Chrg_CTRL=32KΩ at X170 system connector (in the CMT module)
If V_IN has low resistance (5kΩ), check C170 and R170
If V_IN has high resistance (MΩ), check F170
If CHRG_CTRL=0Ω, R172 is faulty
Check BSI–line from X160 battery connector to N110 CCONT Pin 62=10KΩ. If value is not ok check BSI line for shorts
or breaks and change faulty components (C160, R122, C160, D100, N100)
Check PWM 32Hz squarewave with ACP9–Charger and 1Hz with ACP7–Charger (when connected) at Pin 7 of CHAPS.
If there is no signal, change CCONT N110
If the battery power indicater is scrolling continuously without charging or it overloads, check voltage at CHAPS N120
Pin 5 and 12. They must have the same voltage level as VB = 3.6V (depends on battery voltage). When different check
N120 and R131 for cold or broken soldering, change faulty component if necessary.

Battery pad
Occurrence: In all HW versions except 6000. Fixed in HW version 6000 from IMEI 449211/70/510456/0.
Symptoms: 'Insert SIM card' –text on CMT display
'SIM card rejected' –text on CMT display
CMT shuts down
Drop calls
No network sometimes
Not charging sometimes
PDA reboots (NO when lid opened and closed repeatedly)
Memory corrupted
Description: This mentioned symptoms will happen when the battery can move slightly and battery connectors pins
drill tiny holes through gold plating on battery pads. After that those hole areas get corroded and the connector pin´s
can lose for a couple of milliseconds connection to the battery.
This problem can be fixed by preventing the movement of the battery and by changing damaged batteries. Preventing
the movement has been made by adding the battery pad (code 9480614) on phones chassis. When the battery has
been forced to be tight with battery pad, connector pins will not damage battery pads. Breaks in battery contact will
not happen anymore.
Repair instructions:
Add the battery pad (code 9480614) to phone chassis like shown in Picture 1 below.

Backup battery
Occurrence: In all HW versions.
Symptoms: Date 1.1.80 after inserting the main (BLN-3) battery
Description: Backup battery may get empty or there might be bad contact.
Repair instructions:
-
Check the backup battery voltage, it should be between 2.4VDC and 3.1VDC.
If the backup battery is empty or under 2.4VDC, recharge the battery or change if it is necessary.
If battery is over 2.4VDC, check the blue plastic collar if it is too warped. In this case the plus pole of the backup
battery and the contact area on the Printed Wiring Board does not connect so change the backup battery.
Check the printing mark on the backup battery, with the old backup battery it may be under the contact finger. In
this case if it is possible try to rotate the backup battery so that the contact finger connects correctly, otherwise
change the backup battery.
Note! Do not bend contact finger more! If the spring force of the contact finger is too high the soldering joints of the
backup battery holder may get broken.
