Safety instructions

Before you use the device or its accessory application, please ready carefully all procedures
stated in this user manual so that you can enjoy using the disk correctly.
The safety instructions below inform you how to use the device in safe manner. Please read all
safety instructions in detail and make sure you understand them fully before reading other
parts of this manual.

Do not attempt to disassemble any parts of the product, this item should only be carried
out by authorized personnel.
This product contains electronic parts and should be kept away from water. If the unit
comes into contact with water or other liquids, please remove it he immediately from the
PC or charger. Do not continue to use the unit as it could cause an electrical short circuit
of the product and thus cause a fire.
Please do not attach or detach the device from personal computer with a dripping-wet
hand. This action may cause electrical short-circuit of the product itself.
Keep this product away from direct sunlight, fire or area with high temperature.
Keep this product away from electromagnetic waves. Exposure to electromagnetic
waves could cause product damage or information loss. Walkie-talkies and Mobile
telephones are producers of electromagnetic waves; Carry your mobile phone in a
different pocket.

II.

First steps

!!! Charge the unit for 8 hours as a first step using the included charger.
Keep the mechanical power switch in the off position while charging.

2.1 connecting to PC
With computer on (Booting finished), connect the USB cable to the MP3 Player and Computer USB port,
then turn on the mains power switch (sliding mechanical switch No.3 in diagram), then press key 8 (from
diagram) “menu/on/off” to turn on the unit on and initialize a USB data transfer link. The unit is
simultaneously powered by the USB port of your computer.

2.2 storing data and uploading MP3/WMA songs
With the device and PC connected as in segment 2.1 above, the device will be acting as a external flash
drive. You simply drag data files or MP3/WMA files from the hard-disk or other drives of the computer to
the MP3 drive. The files remain in storage on the MP3 drive even if the power is off. DO NOT REMOVE
THE DRIVE FROM THE USB PORT OR TURN IT OFF IF FILES ARE BEING TRANSFERRED. This
will cause data loss.

2.3 turn on/off machine
To turn on the unit, just slide the mains switch (3) to on and then press the menu/on/off switch (9). To turn
the unit off, press the menu/on/off switch (9) for approximately two seconds and then turn the mains switch
(3) off. The key issue to remember is: When connected to the computer and transferring data, do not turn the
unit off. If no data is being transferred then you can turn the unit off and remove the drive from the USB
connector. Some operating system versions first want you to give a command before you physically remove
the unit. Check your “OS” operating manual or online help regarding this issue.

2.4 playing music (MP3/WMA)
Turn on the unit. The first option in the display is MP3/WMA. Just press button 5 to play. You can press key
5 again to pause or press key 5 and hold it down for a few seconds to enter stop mode.

2.5 battery life and charging method
The device contains a rechargeable battery (capacity 750mAh). Please charge the unit for 8 hours after
taking it out of the packaging for the first time. Depending on the settings used, the unit will play for up to
10 hrs continuously. The life Cycle life of the battery depends upon conditions of usage. The battery is
guaranteed for six months after purchase date. In case a replacement battery is required it can only be
exchanged by a qualified technician. Do not attempt to open the housing yourself. Under below conditions,
please charge up the battery

When showing
symbol (empty battery)on the display or machine automatically powers
itself off.
Charging method: There are two ways. In any case, turn mains power switch (3) on the side to the
OFF position. Method 1) Use charger for charging – 8 hrs continuously for full charge or Method
2) Connect the device to the computer via the USB port for charging by PC. Be sure your PC
stays on. Important note: Do not turn the mains power switch to on when charging. This will
charge but not effectivly.

3.3 display during play mode
When the device plays the music, Some ID3 tags are shown, like song names, etc.
Cycle play mode is shown in display including:
Normal (nothing)

Repeat track

Repeat all

Shuffle Repeat

3.4 volume control
When songs are played, press and hold continuously arrow up or
arrow down to adjust volume, it would be displayed on the screen
for showing the status

3.5 voice/music segment repeating function

When you need repeat a segment of an MP3/WMA song or recorded file, you may use repeat A-B to do this
(The function is great for language learning purposes)
1. During play mode, when songs or voice file is playing, press A-B/light key quickly for point A
establishment. The song continues to play on.
2. While song or recorded file is continuing, press the A-B/light key again quickly to establish the end
pint. The A-B segment is now fixed and will immediately start repeating the segment you have
marked.
3. To dismiss the A-B segment, press the A-B/light key again.

3.6 voice recording/play voice recorded file
The device supports long time recording for saving your important information. The symbol for voice

recording is

. The exact operation is as follows:

Start Recording
1. Press key (menu) to enter menu. Use Arrows to mover to select record. During recording mode,
you can press play/pause key for control recording segment.
2. Recording format is PCM/ MS ADPCM/ IM ADPCM. Record message would be filed as V001,
V002, etc. The saving location as external drive is X:\VOICE\. If the disk is full, system will
indicate “NO SPACE”and stop recording

3. During recording mode, if you want to pause recording, you can press pause key (key to the right).
If would like to continue recording, slightly press the key again to continue. Should you like to stop
recording the file, simply press the menu key.
Play Voice-recording file
4. Press the menu key then use arrows to move to menu – WAV voice, press play key (far right) to
select playing the voice segment
5. During playing of voice recorded file, you can use functions like pause, stop, track up/down arrows
and A-B repeat.
Exit from voice recording mode
6. Press menu key to move back to MP3/WMA play mode

3.7 formatting the machine
The device supplies the functionality for formatting the drive using the format program supplied with the
Windows FAT system. Exact operation as follows:
1.Connect the device to PC as an external drive through the USB Port.
2.Select the drive and right click, choose FAT format under proper selection, start formatting the drive
and can clean and reset memory sectors inside.

3.8 Deleting MP3/Voice recorded file
Whenever you would like to delete an MP3/WMA/voice recorded file or WAV, you can use menu for
“Erase Files” to do this.
1) Press the menu Key to choose “Erase Files”.

2) Press the arrow keys to toggle to option “Erase Files”, then press the Play key.
3) Press the arrow keys again to select file to be deleted and the play key once to choose the file and a
second time to confirm or press the A-B Key to cancel.

3.9 FM stereo

The unit provides an integrated FM receiver module, which can be modified with the internal option
controls.
1) Press the menu key to enter menus, use the arrows to move to FM Tuner, then press the play key to
select the FM mode. The first stored frequency appears. There are three options from this mode:
RADIO, SCAN and STORE
2) In RADIO mode (programmed stations memory, the first mode), slightly press the arrow keys to
move from stored frequency 1 to stored frequency 30. Note if you press and hold an arrow key the
volume can be adjusted.
3) To record RADIO signals, slightly press the A-B key to start FM recording (good for examining
information for the future.) Press the menu key to stop the recording, the recorded file will be saved
under root (top) directory.
4) During SCAN mode, press arrow-up or arrow-down for fine tuning up/down or Ppress the play key
for auto-scanning. The auto-scanning procedure will stop scanning when it finds 30 stations.
5) During STORE mode, whenever finishing a single fine-tuning (one station tuned-in), press the
menu key and STORE appears to save the station. Use the arrow keys to choose the station
memory spot (P1 to P30). Maximum number of stations possible to be stored is 30, then press the
play key.
Remarks
After saving FM Stations please exit menu via the EXIT command. This way stations will be properly
saved. Also, please turn off the unit always with the Menu/on/off button first, then the mains power
(sliding) switch

Hi-level parameter set-up

4.1 cycle-playing mode

The unit can play 10 seconds (pre-listening), normal music playing, single song in-cycle or all songs in
cycle. Their functions are indicated as follows:

4.2 equalizer (EQ)
The EQ settings allow you to choose the equalizer type best fitted for your music type.

Use arrow up/down to adjust contrast. The display would show
contrast status, like the figure on the left

Backlight duration
You can choose the duration of backlight. It can be from 0 to 60 seconds.

4.4 information
Used to check space available and version of the device. The options are:
1. Available space: total space of memory and available memory
2. software version of the machine

Connecting to PC and acting as external hard disk

5.1 USB port connection
The device use computers’ USB port for uploading/downloading MP3/WMA files or data files.
1. Check your computer whether there is USB port (with reference to your PC’s user manual)
2. Use the supplied USB cable to connect the MP3 to the PC.

5.2. USB data transfer and uploading MP3
1. No driver is required if your windows version is above 98. Under “My Computer” the unit will show up

as a removable hard disk. Then the device can assigned as external hard disk, as shown below:

2. Should you require a connection with a Wiindows 98/SE system, you will need to install the driver from
the CD.

5.3 driver installation for windows 98
Under Windows Me/2000/XP and MAC OS 9.X the device is driveless, i.e Windows has a built-in
driver and therefore the init is plug and play, but under Windows 98/SE you need the driver from the
CD.
1. Put CD ROM driver into the drive
2. Click “Install driver” or “Setup”, the system will report “Installation
successful”
3. After installation, please reboot the computer
When you plug the device into the USB socket of your computer’s USB port, and it shows up as a

removable hard disk, the installation process is complete

5.4 disconnecting USB link
After you finish copying data, and would like to disconnect the USB like, the proper procedures are as
follows:
1. WIN2000/Me/XP
On screen right bottom corner, click once for “unplugging USB device” (A little
window will open.)

2. Windows98/SE
Disconnect when transfer is done by seeing indication on screen
3. MAC OS operating system:
Click “Others” and “Exit” and click for removable drive
[Warning] Should the user falsely disconnect the USB link, data will be lost.

System Recovery

6.1 FAT formatting the drive
The machine can be formatted correctly by any FAT format. However, if user formats the
839 external-drive in PC with Non-FAT format, it would cause the drive unable to play
any songs or transfer data, while the 839 drive can still be recognized as external drive. In
this case, system recovery by FAT format needs to be used
6.2 To recover the drive by FAT format
To recover the machine, simply use CD ROM attached and press “setup.exe”. Running
through the software, you can find “START” menu with “Format” or “Update” executing
program. Kindly attach the machine with USB port – power switch “ON” and press slight
“MENU” button to turn on the machine so as to make 839 recognized as external-drive,
choose “Format” program and execute, choose “ok” to complete FAT formatting
procedure. The machine is then recovered. If the machine shows a low-charge, make sure
power switch “OFF” and charge it up again.

FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions):
(1) Q: Why can some WMA songs be downloaded but can not be played?
A: There are a lot of songs on web with WMA format. WMA songs have a
DRM as licensing protection code. The DRM stops unauthorized people from
decoding those WMA songs that are DRM protected. It is a method used
for protecting owner’s copyright.
The digital player supports of WMA playing. When you want to download
an authorized WMA song to the device, please do not do it directly using
command “copy” for the purpose because the songs may not be able to
be play on the device. Please first open the Windows Media Player and
choose “FILE” - & gt; “OPEN” all WMA songs to be transferred. Then, left
click “hand-held/portable device/equipment”. The display would show
up “music copy” signal. At this moment, left click all songs that you
would like to copy, and click on left upper corner, copy the music, then
you can transfer all WMA song into the device for playing.
(2) Q: Why could we not download a document?
A: Please make sure the USB port is well connected between computer and
our digital music player and check whether the machine is in “ON”
status.
Pls. make sure USB driver installed for Windows 98/SE.
Pls. confirm capacity remained is available or not.
Pls. check whether power is enough.
(3) Q: Why do different songs have different volumes?
A: The reason for that depends on the parameters encoded with the various MP3 files
differ case by case.

This is the customized Windows host software for SigmaTel MSCN Audio Player. Please verify that all the text and graphics are acceptable and let us know immediately if any changes are required.

This is a USBMSC host software implementation and will require USBMSC firmware (built using sdk 2.400 or later) with matching USBMSC Vendor and Product IDs as well as matching SCSI VENDOR and PRODUCT IDs. The firmware binaries shipped with this host, if any, were used to test your host applications and drivers on SigmaTel development hardware. You must replace the SigmaTel binaries with your hardware-specific firmware for proper operation of your player.
